About the Event
Join interviewer Andrew Celentano for an interesting discussion with Jim Shaw, an expert at Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) Solutions, with a core focus on Structural, Thermal, and Fluids Simulations using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). He has worked for Curtiss-Wright, Northrop Grunman, Bowe Bell & Howell, Kodak and Heidts Automotive Group, where he worked on the design of high-performance automotive chassis and suspension systems. Jim volunteers with the Society of Automotive Engineers, specifically with the Formula SAE Competition, in which he was a student 20 years ago, and has been a volunteer/mentor for the past 6 years. Through SAE, he engages with around 500 students a year, coaching them through the design, analysis, build, and racing of small open wheel racecars as well as visiting them on campus to discuss the use of CAE tools for their programs and in preparation for entering the industry after graduation. Jim has raced cars on a variety of tracks and one of his fondest memories was racing a souped-up Mini-Cooper and beating out BMW’s. He’ll talk about the tracks he has raced on and the cars he raced with. We’ll find out more about how one goes about racing and the ins and outs of being successful on the track.
